In recent years, there has been a growing trend of increasing cases of childhood obesity. According to the American Obesity Association, approximately 30.3% of all children ages 6-11 are overweight. While there are medical causes for childhood obesity that may not be treatable with behavior modification, diet and exercise alone, this article will discuss the non-medical causes of childhood obesity.

There are many different causes of obesity, both in adults and children. Two of the biggest preventable culprits that cause obesity at any age are: lack of activity and improper diet.

With the advent of cable and digital television, computers, gaming consoles and the internet, many children are no longer choosing to play outside during their free time and are opting for indoor activities instead. Unfortunately, activities such as these require little or no physical exertion. Read the rest of this entry »

Depression Really is a Medical Condition

stethoscope notepadDepression is Much More Than Just Feeling Sad

We all get sad sometimes, and we all have bouts of what we have come to call depression, but the truth is, there are lots of different types of depression.

There is a mental health issue known as depression. This type of depression is usually short lived, situational, and while it is caused by a chemical and/or hormonal change, when you change the circumstances that have caused this type of depression, the brain begins to release and/or re uptake new chemicals, and this type of depression goes away.

Then there is something that is becoming more well-known that is called clinical or medical depression. This type of depression really has little to do with circumstances or situations in one’s life. However, it should be noted that circumstances can indeed exacerbate and make it worse. A person with clinical or medical depression gets depressed, just like everyone else does, but in their brain, there is a malfunction of the neurotransmitters that does not allow the brain to release and/or re uptake the chemicals necessary to move out of this state of being. Eat Watermelon for a Healthy Sex Life

file000343656915Nutrients in Watermelon Work Similarly to Viagra

One of the things I learned early on when looking at alternative health options to treat my multiple health conditions was that one of the worst detriments to our health comes from the foods we choose to eat. Well, it stands to reason that if food can cause negative health consequences, that when chosen properly, food could also cause positive health consequences.

That led me to learning more about things like the anti-inflammatory diet, the gluten-intolerance diet, the Paleo diet and more. Even the much discussed and debated Atkins low-carb/high-fat/moderate protein diet was created by a cardiologist to help his heart patients. So all these diets make it clear that, whether they work as intended or not, food itself can indeed have a medicinal or therapeutic or holistic effect on the body. Read the rest of this entry »

Burn Scar Prevention With Lavender Essential Oil

file6311331753644Lavender Helps Burn Pain and Scar Appearance Improvement

Several years ago, I had never heard of essential oils. One day, I took a plate of manicotti out of the microwave, and while carrying the plate, with cheese and sauce so hot it was bubbling still, I tripped and spilled the entire plate against my bare chest. The resulting burn was so bad that when I wiped the sauce and cheese from my chest with a towel, it pulled skin off with it, leaving me with second- and third-degree burns.

A quick visit to the ER later, and I was sent home with some cooling gel and antibiotics as well as pain medication, narcotics. While the narcotic pain medication did help reduce the pain and allow me to sleep some at night, during the day, in the heat of West Texas where I lived, it did little to alleviate the pain and made my head fuzzy and concentration was difficult.

A friend of mine mailed me something she swore would be a magic cure for my pain. I was skeptical. It seems whenever you let people know there’s something wrong, everyone has their own ‘home remedy’ to ‘cure’ your condition. Well, this time, she was right. What she sent me was lavender essential oil, a 15ml bottle. Read the rest of this entry »

Exercise for Fibromyalgia Pain Relief

freeimages.co.uk medical imagesFibromyalgia Pain Can Lessen With the Right Body Movements

Fibromyalgia is a condition that has many varied symptoms but chief amongst them by many sufferers is chronic pain. I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia many years ago, and while I definitely live with chronic pain, my other medical conditions are more acute, so my doctors never pay much attention to helping me manage fibromyalgia symptoms. Because of this, I’ve had to find my own means for managing the pain and other symptoms that can sometimes be caused by fibromyalgia.

Fibromyalgia pain can take many forms, from joint and muscle pain to an all-over achiness that is difficult to describe or pinpoint. This pain differs from person to person, as does the response to the various treatments available to manage the fibromyalgia pain.

One universal management technique for fibromyalgia pain is exercise. Moderate physical activity that includes stretching, isometrics, and light aerobic exercise have all been shown in studies to help alleviate and perhaps prevent the pain often associated with fibromyalgia. Advice to Teens: How to Know when You’re in Love

Love and Infatuation and Attraction Are Different Things: How Do You Know the Difference?

As a mom of two kids, one who has just passed her teen years and one who is just moving into his, one of the questions they both have asked me is about love, relationships, and of course, sex. I like to think of myself as a somewhat progressive parent, in that I have no problems discussing real-life issues and my own experiences with my children. I’m honest with them, with age appropriateness, about my experiences in love and relationships. There are a lot of relationship scenarios and situations even adults don’t understand. If adults can’t even understand these ‘grownup’ things, I think it’s hardly fair that teens are expected to understand them. How to Know When You’re in Love: Love Doesn’t Make Sense Read the rest of this entry »

How to Cure Hiccups

Annoying Spasms that Cause Hiccups Can Be Stopped!

Hiccups always seem to come at the worst time, don’t they? There’s actually a reason for that. Emotions and emotional situations are actually known to be precursors to hiccups. That means when you’re nervous or excited, the chances of getting a bout of hiccups is increased.Hiccups also can happen when gulping air, water or food too quickly. People are also more prone to hiccups when bellies are full, particularly overfull stomachs at all-you-can-eat buffets or back yard barbecue bonanzas.

The problem isn’t getting hiccups, but rather the fact that they are unpredictable. It’s hard to get rid of them! The good news is, hiccups usually never last for more than about 5-15 minutes at the most. So the best cure for most hiccups is just to wait until they go away on their own.
